On 21 February 2024, a part of the Nettelhorsterbrug in Lochem, Netherlands, collapsed leaving two dead and leaving another two to five injured.[1]
Bridge[edit]
The Nettelhorsterbrug a canal bridge in Lochem, the Netherlands under construction over the Twentekanaal as part of provincial road N346 that is being build by Royal BAM Group. The bridge will be 136 metres long, 25 metres height and will have a width of 12.5 metres. It will have a total weight of 1.3 million kilograms. According to the BAM group, a bridge of this size is not often built in the Netherlands.[2]
The bridge was manufactured by Aelterman in Ghent, Belgium and shipped in parts to Lochem.[3][4] The current infrastructure around the Twente Canal is not suitable for shipping an entire bridge construction on pontoons. Because of that the parts were assembled on the associated work site.[5] [6]
The name the bridge refers to hamlet Nettelhorst and this name was decided by an election.[7]
Accident[edit]
Background[edit]
It is understood that bridge collapses or construction accidents in general in the Netherlands rarely happen.[8]
Events[edit]
A part collapsed shortly after 11:00am (local time) on 21 February 2024.[9][10] Workmen had been hoisting arches when the disaster happened.[11] The rescue operation started at 11:11 and included three trauma teams by helicopters and many emergency vehicles.[12]
According to experts, the cranes were good enough for the job and that the disaster was caused by a broken lifting point.[13]
Victims[edit]
The two people who died are not workers of Royal BAM Group, one of the two was working for Belgian construction company Aertssen and the other was a Polish person.[14][9] The two injured people are Belgian people.[14] The injured people were hospitalized.[9] One of the injured people left the hospital on 23 February.[15]
Investigation[edit]
The collapse of the bridge is put under investigation by the Nederlandse Arbeidsinspectie .[8] No work on the bridge will be done for at least a week due to the investigation.[16][9]
Reactions[edit]
Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, said the accident was "tragic" and he wished the victims "much strength".[8]
